Museo Franz Meyer

Aitana, Gaby (my sister-in-law) and I went for a tour in down-town Mexico city, our first goal was to get in Museum Franz Meyer, which is behind Alameda central and Palacio de Bellas Artes, we traveled by metro (subway), not complicated from Gaby's house and at that time of the day (mid morning), " el metro" was almost empty. I never have been before in that museum, but we had an opportunity years ago, to see an exposition of some of its objects right here in SD.
It is a beautiful place, was an hospital in the colonial period, now it contains art and antiques from the collection of Franz Mayer. When he died, he left all the objects to the people of Mexico. The collection has outstanding examples of paintings, sculptures and decorative arts - furniture, gold and silver objects, ceramics, textiles, and featherwork.
There are a lot of religious art, these are just examples of the work made with gold and silver in New Spain, as Mexico was called for 300 years.

We can see in the museum a beutiful folding screen, one side is painted with a view of Mexico city just right after "la conquista", it shows all the new buildings the spaniards rised in the heart of Tenochtitlan, the other side shows a scene of the ancient city.

The nice patio is part of the building next to the museum, it has a cute cafeteria, and of course a quite garden, people can have a break, lunch or just a coffee, not been aware of the city out-side, it is amazing how peacefully and relaxing can be. Also in the second floor we can find a fine library, covered with wood, open to the public with all the books that once did belong to Franz Meyer and more.
