Pepe said, when I rememered him about missing Bidane first day of kinder: "that is mom's thing, what they feel is something that just they understand". So.... that took me to end discussion from my side. When you have such statement and non-feelings about the subject, what can you say...

I don't know where or how I learned something that impressed me a lot: the most powerful, and dramatic encounter between human groups ever, happened right here in Mexico. The meeting between two very different civilizations, between two strangers, "el encuentro entre dos mundos". The Europeans and "Mexicas", either one or another knew so little about the other side, what to expect, how to fight.

To be in the heart of Mexico city, where the ruins of Templo Mayor are, is for me, to recognize what my country is, where it stands, because what we are now, is a product of that episode. That very part of Mexico has been a witness of every thing since the time of La conquista, even before, with the rising of the city of Tenochtitlan.

When the spaniards arrived in theTenochtitlan, they saw with marvelous eyes, the perfection of the place, an island over one lake, the canals that made possible comunication, the buildings, the organization, the vitality of the people.

Now we have the ruins of the most important temple for the Aztecs and many remains remember us how they lived, their gods, the way of make war, the way of keeping their religion, what they thought about the dead and death, and issue so important for them.

It was tuesday, two days after election, the day was cloudy as many of summer days are, because it is rany season in Mexico, down town had its usual activities and we spent the day as a family with sister-in-law Gaby. Probably Pepe was a little unpatient because at that time Portugal played against Francia, but behaved well anyway.

The girls were scared with the place, the symbols of death every where, and the ruins of the temple that was a pyramid made out of layers, kind of complicated for them to undertstand.
Still interesting things, stone snakes, pre-hispanic jewels, decorative objects and so, made the tour fine for the girls after all.

Hombres G

Kahlo y Rivera

I'm a true fan of Frida Kahlo, I have been captured by her personality years ago, but have to confess that it happened just after the first mexican movie realesed during the 80's, so now I'm a part of the crowd that loves her. I'm proud that she is mexican and expressed her-self in a very mexican way, she was self-taught and very independet from her famous husband work, by the way, he made murals of big dimensions and she painted in some kind of small way.

So, to see the house of Frida Kahlo, " la casa azul" , we headed to Coyoacan, a neighbourhood located in the south of the city, it was a saturday and the typical stroll by the park of Coyoacan was a little confused, too many people in dark clothes, shiny things and well-gelatinized hair (punketos as we say), so I recommend not to go to that place in saturday or sunday, unless you want to buy "art-crafts" from the people around. By the way, all this kind of stands multiplied during the last years, and have invaded all walking places of the plaza on weekends.

The blue house, where Frida Kahlo was born, lived, painted, hosted Trotsky for a while and died is now a museum, a big bulding located at the corner of the streets of Londres and Allende, not far from the park. It recreates her way of life with Diego Rivera, you can see inside some of her paintings, some of her typical dresses, her diary, her famous bed with the mirror, the corsets she used after so many operations of the back.

Bad to the visitors of the place, you can't take pictures from inside the house, that is frustrating. Outdoors there are a nice garden, a pyramid, big papers dolls Diego and Frida had for easter time and a little cafeteria.

In the blue house still we can see belongings of Diego in exhibition too, but his paintings can be admired mostly in public buildings, since they are murals.

Specially I wanted the kids to see a mural called "Paseo Dominical en la Alameda Central". They know it because we have a poster. The mural represents history of Mexico. To see it we went down-town, the museum is located just next to Alameda Central, before the earthquake of 1986 the mural was in a hotel, unfortunately, the hotel was destroyed, luckily the mural didn't and went to a special site, the museum.

When we entered into the big room the kids were really surprised about the size of the mural, and Bidane said QUE GRANDE ES... It is so big. Indeed.

Museo Franz Meyer

Aitana, Gaby (my sister-in-law) and I went for a tour in down-town Mexico city, our first goal was to get in Museum Franz Meyer, which is behind Alameda central and Palacio de Bellas Artes, we traveled by metro (subway), not complicated from Gaby's house and at that time of the day (mid morning), " el metro" was almost empty. I never have been before in that museum, but we had an opportunity years ago, to see an exposition of some of its objects right here in SD.
It is a beautiful place, was an hospital in the colonial period, now it contains art and antiques from the collection of Franz Mayer. When he died, he left all the objects to the people of Mexico. The collection has outstanding examples of paintings, sculptures and decorative arts - furniture, gold and silver objects, ceramics, textiles, and featherwork.
There are a lot of religious art, these are just examples of the work made with gold and silver in New Spain, as Mexico was called for 300 years.

We can see in the museum a beutiful folding screen, one side is painted with a view of Mexico city just right after "la conquista", it shows all the new buildings the spaniards rised in the heart of Tenochtitlan, the other side shows a scene of the ancient city.

The nice patio is part of the building next to the museum, it has a cute cafeteria, and of course a quite garden, people can have a break, lunch or just a coffee, not been aware of the city out-side, it is amazing how peacefully and relaxing can be. Also in the second floor we can find a fine library, covered with wood, open to the public with all the books that once did belong to Franz Meyer and more.

Centro histórico de la ciudad de México

We arrived first in Mexico City; staying two weeks in, allowed us to visit many places around, one of my favorites is Down town, here is Isabel La Catolica street, walking along we can see old constructions, palaces that belonged to important people of the New Spain. One can imagine how rich was Mexico at that time.

El Casino Español, this building was a hospital during the colonial period, later transformed by the spanish inmigrants into a social gathering place around 1901, the interior is spectacular, the statues in the photo are two bronze-vikings gift from Don Porfirio (president and dictator of Mexico before the revolution) to El Casino.

Aitana rests over the stairs of a very nice building, called Palacio postal, this building has a venetian style, although the interior has a french style with marble floors and an antique elevator.

Feliz cumple a David

FELICIDADES!

WE ARE BACK!

After six weeks away, we are back home! Soon I'll post our trip in a better way, lacking of time and equipment made trouble to post. BUT, I'll make my best to illustrate our mexican route.

Maravillosa, jornada electoral.

Election day, it was a nice and pacific day for all mexicans, 60% of registered voters went to vote. In Mexico city the Martinez Family got up early, ready to be at opening time at the voting place. We are watching t.v late in the night and 49% of the counting for the voting places (casillas electorales) say PAN is winning, but the Federal Electoral Institute is going to count one vote by one (again), to prevent Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (PRD) will open his big mouth -I suppose-. People are supporting PRD at the main plaza in Mexico city, as well Felipe Calderon (PAN) out side his headquarters.

I don't have anything to say about Mexico-Argentina game, just that we lost, and mexicans played well (today). That is our team, some day they play like today, others, well, they just don't know what they are doing. Why is that the best goal of the world cup had happen to us?, and why we had to play the most dramatic game seen in Germany 2006, so far? Because... we are Mexicans!... As Frida Kahlo said "Arbol de la esperanza mantente firme" or "Tree of Hope, Stand Firm".

There are so many things of domestic work that I don't like, one of them is folding laundry, I just hate it, a pile of clothes ready to be my enemy, taking away of me precious time I could use to do some thing else. So at least while doing it, I escape of that torture watching T.V. Today I caught an interview (on mexican t.v) of Galia Moss, the first latin-american woman and the third-one to cross the Atlantic ocean by her-self alone in a sail-boat, just a month ago.

The adventure of Galia Moss, a petit mexican woman, lasted 41 days she departed from Vigo in Spain and finished in Xcaret, close to Cancún. I was very impressed for what she did, alone in the ocean surviving with her own skills, and over all, as she said, with the only company of Galia Moss. It seems as she is a searcher of the own-self, and that trip help her not just to cross the ocean but to start the most difficult trip of all, looking for her, inside her thoughts. When she was a girl, she had a barbie doll doing the adventures during the play time. And that reminded me of something I've been thinking lately (after a birthday party Aitana attended to). There are parents believing a Barbie is not a good toy for girls, because those bodies are not realistic. But it is not about the body, what girls like, is the things they can make in the fantasy and dreams, they are representations of them as a woman, they are not babies to take care of, they can be sailors, doctors, teachers, princesses or just a woman. I don't see this remarkable girl been affected by a cliche of trying to be a Barbie, I think Galia's mother saw on her kid, an itelligent person beyond a Barbie doll.
